If you truly love the 280 Ackley Improved, then there’s a nearly 100% chance you are already a handloader. But that doesn’t mean handloading is the only road to 280 AI town! Once you’ve ordered a box or seven of Hornady Precision Hunter ammunition, you’ll be all set to do your best hunting without having to seat primers and fiddle around with dies ahead of time. And once this ammo is all empty, guess what you’ll have? That’s right: premium reloadable brass cases.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, because the ELD-X is one heck of a fine bullet. Thanks to its deformation-proof Heat Shield polymer tip, nearly perfectly concentric Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket, secant ogive profile and boat tail, this round’s 142 grain bullet is able to clear a 24” barrel’s muzzle at a velocity of 2,850 fps and proceed to exhibit a 0.631 G1/0.318 G7 BC. That spells a flat trajectory which carries well over 1,600 ft lbs of kinetic energy to 500 yards!
The ELD-X is a tough cookie. Its alloyed lead core and thick jacket shank are tethered together by Hornady’s proprietary InterLock ring, which makes the ELD-X formidable enough to exhibit superior weight retention following impact at all practical ranges. The “X” in the bullet’s name stands for “eXpansion,” which is precisely what it does once impact slams its Heat Shield tip into its underlying core’s nose cavity.
