Don’t choose just any old 38 Special ammunition for personal protection. When you’re defending the most important things on earth, only ammo like Winchester Defender will do.

Right off the bat, this is an overpressure cartridge: 38 Special +P. If the 130 grain load were standard pressure, it would have a muzzle velocity of around 890 fps (out of a 4” vented barrel). But because its chamber pressure is significantly higher than standard, its muzzle velocity is around 7% higher as a result. The payoff? Flatter trajectory and harder impact. The downside? More recoil, reduced barrel lifespan, and incompatibility with firearms that aren’t rated for +P (any 357 Mag can handle these rounds just fine, though).

This round’s bullet has a bonded jacket. That helps the bullet remain more intact as it penetrates barriers and pierces flesh, which gives it a better chance of reaching one of the threat’s vital organs. The jacketed hollow point combines deep penetration with wide expansion – it can increase in diameter by up to 1.5X!

Nickel-plated brass cases don’t help this round’s bullet hit harder. They do give the round some protection against corrosion, though, and also reduce the kind of metal-on-metal friction which complicates extraction from a cylinder.
