A ban on lead projectiles is not the same thing as a ban on hunting. So long as you’ve got a good supply of lead-free 12 Gauge ammo, you’ll be able to snag dove, quail and other upland game until the cows come home!
This Upland Steel label shell by Federal Premium is loaded with #6 steel shot. Nontoxicity isn’t steel’s only advantage, mind you. The inflexible pellets are nigh immune to deformation, so they won’t flatten down in the barrel and spread out too much upon clearing the muzzle. And because steel’s not as dense as lead, this round contains 40% more pellets than a shell loaded with 1-1/8 ounces of traditional #6 lead shot.
Steel’s lower density does mean that it conserves less momentum. But Federal knows this better than anyone else, which is why they load this shell to a zippy 1,400 fps muzzle velocity. Its 4 dram equivalent means this shell’s recoil does not qualify as “low” by any standard, but on the plus side it’s potent enough to cycle semi-auto without issue.
Its shot is special, but this ammo’s primers, propellant and reloadable hulls all boast the same consistent quality Federal is famous for. Made in Minnesota – a state that is sure to win a Super Bowl one of these days!
