Recoil. It’s an inescapable reality when it comes to firearms. Isaac Newton said as much when he penned his third law: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce recoil:
1. Make the firearm heavier
2. Make the propellant charge lighter
3. Make the projectile(s) lighter
4. Make the muzzle velocity lower
Fiocchi made this 12 Gauge home defense shell’s recoil gentler by taking the fourth route. Its 1,150 fps muzzle velocity is just 25 fps faster than the speed of sound, and much lower than the 1,300 to 1,600 fps muzzle velocity we usually see in a #1 buck shell.

This shell’s lower-recoil performance has many implications. It’s probably not going to cycle a semi-automatic shotgun. Its shot column’s combined muzzle energy is also relatively low at 1,070 ft lbs, although that’s still plenty sufficient for home defense. Most importantly, you’re going to experience significantly less muzzle flip when you fire one of these shells. That will help you keep your muzzle pointed at the target, which is of especial importance when the target happens to be a violent and determined threat to your safety.

This ammo's #1 buck pellets are nickel plated. Their coatings make them harder, and accordingly less able to deform as they plow into a soft medium. It promotes deeper overall penetration, which does help to compensate for comparably lower striking energy.
