We won’t deny it – any 9mm cartridge with a 147 grain bullet is going to deliver a subsonic muzzle velocity. Still, if you’re trying to get the best possible performance with a suppressor or just want your unsuppressed pistol to operate more quietly and produce less muzzle flash, then Hornady Subsonic should make the big cheese (i.e. you) happy.
This round’s 975 fps muzzle velocity doesn’t come close to breaking the sound barrier, so it can’t produce the distinctive sharp report of a supersonic round. Its propellant is specially formulated for optimal functionality with suppressors, and has a low flash signature to help keep your eyes from getting pulled out of their adjustment to the dark.
This round’s bullet is Hornady’s own eXtreme Terminal Performance jacketed hollow point. The XTP’s jacket is drawn instead of plated, which is why it thickens toward the bottom to control more reliable terminal expansion. The XTP’s jacket notches serve the same purpose, and its shielded nose cavity is designed to prevent snagging that could have caused a failure to feed. Noncorrosive brass-cased Boxer-primed reloadable subsonic self-defense 9mm straight from Nebraska!
