Details
This is specialized 22 LR ammunition. It’s a hoot to fire at the range, and it doesn’t exactly make life better for varmints, but where it really shines is self-defense. That’s right – Federal designed this unique ammo so even compact 22 LR handguns can neutralize a threat quickly!
First off, don’t look at this round’s 1,070 fps muzzle velocity and assume that it is weak. Federal recorded that MV with a 2” test barrel. The lightweight 29 grain bullet’s muzzle velocity is 1,650 fps out of a 24” barrel (at which rate its muzzle energy is 175 ft lbs).
Self-defense bullets are typically designed to undergo terminal expansion. In contrast, this round’s bullet has a flat, solid non-expanding point. That enables it to stamp a decently sized hole into a soft medium. More importantly, by completely forgoing expansion the bullet is able to penetrate abnormally deeply. Instead of massive energy transfer, the bullet banks on putting a hole right through a vital organ.
Federal loads this ammunition with premium components all around, including nickel-plated brass cases. They’re corrosion resistant, and they generate less friction in order to support smooth functionality in a semi-automatic.
