For Pete’s sake, whatever you do, do not chamber one of these bad boys in a 17 HMR firearm. Winchester’s 17 WSM is the fastest rimfire cartridge in the world, and is way longer and more powerful than Hornady’s .17 cal varmint duster!
If you want to see all of the 17 WSM’s potential in action, Winchester’s Varmint HV ammunition will deliver in full force. This round tosses out a polymer tipped projectile at a crazy hot velocity of 3,000 fps. Voosh! Fast. The flat-base bullet’s 0.187 G1 ballistic coefficient is high relative to its superlight 20 grain weight. Expect a 50% flatter trajectory compared to the 17 HMR – and 250% the downrange energy to boot.
Winchester didn’t give this round’s bullet a fancy brand name. It’s just a “polymer tip.” Even so, it has all the aerodynamic stability and low-drag geometry it needs to flow straight toward its target, and it delivers precisely the terminal expansion/fragmentation that kills varmints (and predators) deader than … we don’t don’t quite know, but it's something really, really dead.
