Is the 38 Special the most powerful round you could enlist for personal defense? That’s a big, fat no, boss. But some 38 Special rounds are more powerful than others – and this +P load, which Winchester markets to law enforcement agencies (and which is also available to the general public), is certainly one of them.
This round’s 125 grain semi-jacketed hollow point has a muzzle energy of nearly 250 ft lbs (out of a 4” barrel). It’s not going to magically neutralize a threat the instant it touches it, but with good aim you can absolutely stop your attacker’s advance in one shot. The SJHP’s notched semi-jacket promotes effective penetration without hampering its lead nose cavity’s terminal expansion. An effective package, all in all.
This ammo’s nickel-plated brass cases are due to smooth out feeding and extraction in all firearms, including lever guns. Just take care that not all 38 Special revolvers in existence are rated for +P. Make sure yours is before asking it to fire these cartridges!
