When we praise a bullet, we often point out how securely its jacket and core are attached to one another. That prevents it from fragmenting to ensure it penetrates deeply. But in some situations, you want a bullet on the other end of the spectrum – one that crumbles into dust the moment it meets with any resistance. This 40 S&W cartridge from Winchester’s Ranger label fits that bill exactly.
This round features a 135 grain frangible bullet. Such a projectile is made completely out of compressed metal powder, so it turns into uncompressed metal powder when it connects with a barrier or target. That makes this bullet a fine choice for personal protection in sensitive environments such as inside of a house or apartment building. (A Federal Air Marshall would be far better equipped with such a bullet inside of a moving 747 as well.) Many shooters also prefer the frangible bullet for training with steel targets, especially up close. It virtually negates the chance of splash-back or a ricochet putting a shooter in harm’s way, and because it contains no lead it’s far healthier for use in indoor ranges.
Ranger is a law enforcement label, so a Ranger load has hard-working components. These rounds’ new brass casings will swim through a semi-auto without jamming it, and their primers deliver reliable ignition, promote smooth cycling, and don’t create corrosive salts that could rust a handgun.
