You have a lot of options when it comes to 9mm self-defense ammo. We’d hesitate to declare one the absolute best. Even so, we’re confident recommending Winchester Ranger One to anyone who insists on the most reliable performance when their back’s up against a wall.
This cartridge’s 147 grain jacketed hollow point bullet is a heavyweight – the reason why it strikes with more of the momentum it needs in order to tunnel to an effective depth for defensive applications. And because the JHP features a bonded jacket, it’s rugged enough to pierce barriers and still arrive at its target with sufficient momentum for deep penetration.
This round’s JHP has a blue polymer insert inside its nose cavity. Its function is to keep the nose cavity free and clear of debris that could inhibit terminal expansion – but because it has six channels, it still enables pressurized soft tissue to enter the nose cavity and trigger expansion. Very clever!
This ammo is loaded with nickel-plated brass cases. Nickel reduces friction that could have impaired functionality in a semi-automatic, and additionally shields the underling brass against tarnishing and corrosion.
