I doubt that there is a shooter on this website who doesn’t own a 12 gauge shotgun. No, there is no way to prove this statement but it is just to make a point: these things are everywhere and most gun owners have at least one. And why wouldn’t they? They can do everything, they are cheap, and they are generally really fun to shoot (unless you’re shooting magnums).

Buckshot is perhaps the most versatile ammunition for the most versatile personal weapon on the planet. It’s a legitimate hunting load for medium game (hence the name), excellent for personal defense against human predators, and is a potent load for defense against aggressive and dangerous animals to include bears, moose, mountain lions, etc.

The shorter and much less punishing 2 ¾” shot shells have steadily gained popularity in recent years. They offer much quicker follow-up shots, significantly less punishment while shooting, and are amply powerful for anything less than 500 pounds which covers most aggressive species east of the Mississippi.
