Now’s your chance to be a big shot! Once you’ve stocked up on Federal Premium American Eagle 223 Rem ammunition, you’ll be able to spend all day plugging targets at the range. Other firearm enthusiasts will ask you for some, and you will say “No! Get your own Federal Premium American Eagle 223 Rem ammunition!” Mooches like them make us sick to our stomachs.
This cartridge’s bullet is a target shooter’s best pal. The full metal jacket boat tail features the hard gilding metal shell it needs to feed reliably, a cannelure which stops the bullet from shifting out of its seating in the case, and a tapered base which makes it more ballistically efficient. The bullet’s heavier 62 grain weight does reduce its muzzle velocity to 3,020 fps, but the added mass makes it less susceptible to wind drift – perfect if you’re covering serious distances at an outdoor range. And while this round’s bullet may share the same weight as the M855 projectile, it does not contain steel and is totally unable to attract a magnet.
Federal loads their American Eagle series cartridges with virgin cases: straight out of the factory, pure brass and reloadable. These rounds’ noncorrosive Boxer primers are sealed so you can enjoy greater peace of mind if you attend to keep them in storage indefinitely.

Q: Do you know if this is roughly equivalent in ballistics to NATO 5.56 M855?
I'm looking for non-steel core substitutes that wouldn't require sight adjustments when switching from the M855 (green tip).
Thanks

A: Federal lists the velocity of this ammunition at 3020fps, which is close to the velocity of M855 from an AR-15, but that is from a 24" test barrel. Depending on the distance you are shooting, the length of your barrel, and your personal preferences, sight adjustments may or may not be required. With a 100 yard zero, and if M855 was 200fps faster out of your rifle's barrel, it would impact 3/4" higher at 200 yards, 2.5" higher at 300 yards, and 5.5" higher at 400 yards than this Federal .223 62gr FMJBT. Trajectory differences would be roughly halved if the velocity difference was 100fps.
