Ammo Overview

Manufacturer - PMC
Bullets - 62 grain full metal jacket M855 steel core
Casings - Boxer-primed brass
Quantity - 1,000 rounds per case

Details

Loaded to NATO’s M855 specifications, this “green tip” ammunition uses 62-grain steel-cored full metal jacket bullets for high penetration. The heavier bullets result in a muzzle velocity of about 2,920 fps, slightly lower than M193 ball. This case holds 1,000 cartridges in 20-round boxes.

All of this ammunition uses Boxer-primers with reloadable brass cases. It is 5.56x45 NATO ammo, so make sure that your firearm isn't only chambered for 223 Rem before firing it.

Due to its steel core, this ammunition should not be used on reactive steel targets for safety reasons.

PMC X-TAC ammunition is military-grade product manufactured by Poongsan Corporation and made available to American shooters thanks to excess capacity. A: Yes sir. The 223 Wylde chamber is designed for both 5.56x45 and 223 Rem ammunition.

Posted On: 3/29/2024 By: Joshua Quint

A: Hi Joshua! This cartridge's bullet contains steel. Many ranges prohibit such bullets for safety reasons. Please ask whichever range you intend to visit about their magnetic ammo policy before bringing 5.56 M855 there.

Posted On: 12/16/2022 By: Holden

A: No sir! This ammo is brand new and its brass cases have never before been fired. The new cases are reloadable, as in they're capable of being reloaded.

A: Thanks for reaching out TG! Our language was unclear and I apologize for the confusion. This is 5.56 ammo, and your rifle is chambered for 5.56 – they are a perfect match for one another. What our writer meant to express is that 5.56 ammo is unsuitable for rifles chambered for 223 Rem. (Rifles chambered exclusively for 223 Rem should not fire 5.56, as the slightly more powerful cartridge may damage them. The advisory is relevant because the two rounds have virtually identical physical dimensions. Rifles chambered for 5.56 are able to safely the slightly weaker 223 Rem, however.)

A: Very interesting! We must have gotten this ammo's MV from its page on PMC's website (pmcammo.com/product/x-tac-5-56k), but I believe the box is probably more up to date. Thank you for the heads up!

A: Our apologies, but we are unable to ship to California!

Posted On: 4/14/2020 By: Robert Butler

A: Hello, Robert! It ought to take two to three days in transit for our shipment to arrive in North Carolina. If you place an order by 3pm EST, it will ship that same day.

Posted On: 3/19/2020 By: J.

A: Thank you for reaching out! We do often offer an “overbox” option that would put your order in a plain cardboard box. (Even when we do ship in a plain box, we are legally required to mark the package “ORM-D” in compliance transportation regulations.) Owing to the recent surge in business we're experiencing in response to the health scare, we are unable to offer the overbox option at this time.

A: Hello Allen, These 62gr. FMJ rounds by PMC in 5.56 have an advertised muzzle velocity of 3100fps and a muzzle energy of 1323 ft.lbs. They should function great in any rifle chambered in 5.56.

Posted On: 10/27/2013 By: Butch

A: You are correct. The XM855 by PMC is cased in new brass and has a 62-grain steel core.

Posted On: 8/28/2013 By: Jake

A: At first glance, both .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO appear to be the same size. This is actually true in terms of the bullet and brass used, with the 5.56 being slightly longer, un-noticeable unless you measure it precisely. The main difference, and the reason behind these two not being interchangeable, is the pressure (or powder charge) between the two different rounds. The 5.56 NATO round calls for a higher maximum pressure, while the .223 Rem calls for a lower maximum pressure. If you are shooting a .223 Rifle, the chamber may not be able to handle the pressure of the 5.56 round. This means that the common .223 Rem round will be able to safely fire in a 5.56 NATO chamber without any issues. Even with a lower pressure, the rifle will still function correctly. However 5.56 NATO ammo should not be used in a rifle designated for .223 Rem ammo only. Most modern AR-15 style rifles are chambered for the higher pressure 5.56 NATO round, however this cannot be said for 100% of similar rifles on the market, so its always a good idea to double check the chamber of your rifle. This can be determined via a marking on the outside of the barrel or elsewhere on the rifle.

A: Yes! The spent brass casings leftover from shooting this PMC 5.56x45mm NATO ammo may be recovered for the reloading process. All rounds are boxer primed and do not contain any corrosive loading components from the factory.

A: The images for this PMC 5.56x45 ammo shows the correct Full Metal Jacket round. The green tip we are seeing on the bullet is a thin layer of paint to indicate that this bullet is an M855 steel core bullet. Zooming in on one of the pictures should show some of the imperfections of this paint. This green coating should not wear off into your barrel or cause any build up outside of normal use of 5.56x45 ammunition. Since this steel core is on the inside tip of the bullet, the barrel will only be exposed to the copper jacket.

Posted On: 4/11/2013 By: Phil

A: The steel core found in these bullets are towards the front tip of the bullet. However, these cores are covered in the standard copper jacket found on almost every full metal jacket cartridge on the market. This core will not cause any damage or premature wear on your rifle. The steel core does a better job of penetrating its target, including other metals. This could be considered both a pro and a con. If you are plinking at throw-away targets, this feature may be considered a pro. If you are shooting at metals you wish to reuse in the future, you may want to avoid using steel core ammo. This is one reason they are prohibited in some indoor ranges. Overall this is an excellent choice for outdoor target shooting into a dirt bank.
