Fusion 270 Win ammo from the Federal Premium line is a great deer round. It’s purpose built for that game type, though, now, Federal lists other game as suitable targets too. The .270 is about as perfect a deer round that has ever existed. Yes, it does not offer the massive energy dump of the .30-06 Springfield and it isn’t quite as economical as some of the larger grain .223’s which have come onto the deer scene recently, but it’s got serious ballistics and offers no overkill like most .30 cal + rounds can do. The 130 grain projectile is a Fusion round that offers a “fused” chemically applied jacket to the lead core that is skived at the tip to ensure reliable expansion. The high weight retention (by virtue of the chemical bonding process) means that you get the best of both worlds: penetration and weight retention.

The 3050 velocity and the 2685 ft. lbs. of energy delivery at the muzzle makes this ideal for the moderate to larger deer population. The Brass casing is Boxer primed and therefore offers easy reloadability and quality feeding and reliable extraction.

None of this is news to those who aren’t new to Federal Fusion though – it’s been a top performer since its inception.

A: The 130gr bullet is faster and will have a flatter short range trajectory. It may also offer less felt recoil, depending on how the manufacturer loads their ammo. It will not penetrate as far as the 150gr and is more susceptible to wind drift at range than the 150.
