Q: Should I use a higher grain if I am shooting with open sights?
Posted On: 10/21/2011 By: Anonymous
A: Bullet weight selection is not necessarily associated with the type of sights used, unless the sights are not a close match for various types of ammo and their various trajectories. If you are not sure what your sights are designed for, you could contact the manufacturer, or buy a box of both 150gr and 170gr Federal .30-30 and see which one is closer to your iron sights at various distances. Another consideration would be the intended target: the heavier bullets are appropriate for heavier game, while the lighter bullets work well for thinner-skinned game as well as practice and plinking.
