Details
A premium rifle round made for long distance shooting out of the .338 Lapua Magnum. The new standard for medium ballistics at great distances, this is a “suitable replacement” round for about 90% of what the .50 BMG round was doing previously at extreme distances. The round itself is quite capable, and while this load isn’t particularly hot compared to other match rounds, it is a very high quality version of the cartridge with sustainable ballistics over more than 400 yards. In fact, at 500 yards +, the trajectory drop is sub 41 inches. A testament to the high ballistic coefficient and the selection of premium components as well as highly consistent velocities.
The capability of the cartridge is now becoming well known for tactical shooting in an antipersonnel and anti-materiel niche, but the long range hunting and target benefits of this round are just starting to be touted. Yes, the ammunition is pricy, but for the extreme ranges, there are few rounds that can even reach the target 400-800 yards, let alone at the same effectiveness of the .30-06 round at 75 yards.
The blistering 2740 feet per second muzzle velocity for the Hornady Match load and the double take inducing 4760 ft. lbs. of energy produced at the muzzle, compared to the 2200 feet per second and 3060 ft. lbs. energy at 500 yards is truly hard to compare to any other big game round.
