Hornady is temporarily loading this ammo with non-plated brass cases due to the current unavailability of nickel.

Hornady takes the .357 Magnum “manstopper” cartridge to the next level with its FTX hollow point self defense load. The 125 grain polymer-tipped FTX jacketed hollow point leaves the muzzle at 1200 feet per second from a 2 inch barrel (and even faster from a full length barrel, up to 1500 fps at 8 inches), punching right through heavy clothing and other barriers to quickly incapacitate assailants. In case multiple shots become necessary, Hornady uses special propellants that reduce recoil and minimize muzzle flash to increase the shooter’s effective rate of fire.

Each round in this box of 25 uses Boxer-primed brass cases.

Hornady is a well-regarded manufacturer of premium bullets, which it produces at its headquarters in Grand Island, Nebraska. The company was founded in 1949 by Joyce Hornady; today, it operates under the leadership of his son, Steve Hornady, who assumed the role of CEO in the 1980s and built on his father’s legacy by bringing the company into the loaded ammo market. Hornady ammo has established a strong reputation in the police, self-defense, and hunting markets due to the strong performance of its bullets and the consistency and quality of its loads.

A: Thanks for reaching out Tom! Assuming your Ruger is chambered for 357 Magnum, absolutely. This would make a good choice of ammo for self-defense with a 357 Mag SP101.

A: Yes. The 357 Magnum round is designed to be interchangeable with both pistols and lever rifles chambered in 357 Magnum. If you are shooting an older lever rifle, you may want to have it inspected by a local gunsmith to double check to see that it is in good working condition. Defensive rounds, such as this Hornady FTX, is usually loaded to higher pressures than most traditional FMJ or cast lead loads in 357 Magnum.

A: This Hornady Critical Defense ammo would work well on wild dogs or cougars. It will retain a lot of weight in fairly light and thin-skinned animals such as those. Of course, as with any ammo, shot placement is paramount.

A: This .357 Mag 125gr Hornady FTX load would be a good choice for whitetail deer. So would a 158gr bullet, but the 125gr FTX has a higher ballistic coefficient and won't drop as much at longer range. As with any bullet, shot placement is critical.

A: The muzzle energy of this Hornady 357 Mag 125gr FTX bullet is 624 ft-lbs. "Impact energy" would depend on distance to target.
