Loaded with modern defense ammo such as these Hornady FTX
hollow-points, a .38 Special revolver remains a potent and reliable choice
favored by CCW holders, plainclothes police officers, and citizens simply
looking to defend their homes from intruders. Hornady’s Critical Defense load
uses a light 110 grain “Flex Tip” polymer tipped JHP and +P high-pressure
loading to achieve a muzzle velocity of 1010 feet per second. This velocity,
which rivals many autoloader cartridges, combines with the hard-hitting FTX
bullet to provide impressive penetration and expansion. Definitely a far cry
from old lead-nose ammo when it comes to stopping an attacker! This box holds
25 cartridges, each of which uses Boxer-primed brass.
Hornady’s specialty is producing precision-engineered bullets that punch well above their weight. The company has done this since 1949, enjoying decades of success supplying other ammo loaders with its innovative bullets before entering the loaded ammo market in the 1990s. Hornady only makes premium loaded ammo using top-notch components. Given the company’s high standards and the expertise of Hornady’s design teams regarding their own bullet designs, it’s no surprise that such a venture proved highly successful.

Q: How does this round rate to other defensive rounds in penetration?
Posted On: 9/29/2011 By: Anonymous
A: In ballistic gelatin or through heavy clothing, it compares well to other ammunition of this caliber. Through barriers such as steel or auto glass, it does not have as much penetration as some other .38 Special ammunition.
