Hydra-Shok rounds from Federal are an old favorite among police officers and CCW practitioners alike and have components which make up the backbone of the most famous modern loads around. Each .40 S&W cartridge is assembled using a reloadable brass casing that is equipped with a non-caustic Boxer primer. Both the primer and case wear a light coat of nickel which repels moisture-based corrosion while making cycling and extraction a much more smooth and reliable affair. The powder inside of the casing uses a flash suppressant additive which alleviates shooter blindness when firing in low light, allowing for quicker reacquistion of the front sight.
The cartridge is crowned with a unique Hydra-Shok JHP (jacketed hollow point) projectile which weighs in at 165-grains. This is relatively light for the caliber and is loaded to produce 980 feet per second of muzzle velocity for reduced recoil without the loss of terminal effectiveness. The Hydra-Shok projectile features pre-programmed jacket skiving, a wide-mouth cavity, and a dense lead core with a peaking plunger in the middle. The plunger is designed to keep the hollow cavity from clogging while it penetrates through clothing layers and ensure that the round will expand consistently in a target, passing its momentum to vital areas in order to shut down a threat in short order.
