Hornady is temporarily loading this ammo with non-plated brass cases due to the current unavailability of nickel.

Hornady has made itself a household name in the personal defense market with heavy hitting cartridges that have a healthy mix of reliability, performance and added value. This .45 Auto Critical Defense 185 grain FTX load is an excellent cartridge for use in any .45, and is particularly well suited to the 1911 platform due to its integral polymer plug and tight tolerances and high level of quality control.

The flex tip jacketed hollow point is a proven design that allows you to get reliable feeding and expansion and wound channels that allow for one shot stops. (900 feet per second muzzle velocities and 333 ft. lbs. of energy make it potent, given the large diameter of the .45 and the grain weight, though it does seem to cut the recoil a bit too.

Rarely are there competitors that can truly compete with the balance of attributes Hornady packs into this load. Reliability is a premium concern when firing out of finely tuned firearms and knowing that your firearm will fire every time it is needed, is the most important factor. Hornady engineers its ammunition in the critical defense line to do just that.

A: Hornady Critical Defense ammo is designed for personal defense, not duty use. This might seem like a contradiction in terms, but the Critical Defense ammo is not designed for barrier penetration. Police officers have a much greater chance of needing to shoot a target through auto glass or steel than those citizens who carry a firearm. If your needs do not include barrier penetration, Critical Defense ammo is an excellent choice.

A: 185gr .45 ammunition traveling at higher velocities is generally flatter shooting than heavier, slower rounds. However, technique and proper shot placement are as important, or more so, than projectile weight or velocity - especially when shooting at longer ranges.

A: Hornady Critical Defense ammo is loaded with the FTX bullet, which allows expansion even after the bullet has passed through heavy clothing. The Custom line is loaded with the XTP bullet, which is also excellent. It's a very accurate bullet that tends to have greater penetration than the Critical Defense line.

A: Hornady Custom ammo is loaded with their XTP hollowpoint bullet. Hornady Critical Defense ammunition is loaded with the FTX bullet, which is a hollowpoint with a flexible polymer tip. Critical Defense ammunition is designed for use against soft targets that may be wearing heavy clothing. It is not intended to defeat barriers such as auto glass. The XTP bullet sometimes performs better in these latter cases. It is also generally regarded as being an extremely accurate projectile design.
