Details

This is one of many Federal lines made for the .45 ACP. While it isn’t their ultra-premium self-defense ammunition this is a potent .45 Auto load that can be used for the range, on targets or for personal protection. The projectile is a 185 grain Hi-Shok bullet, and the line is called the Federal Classic Personal Defense. It has moderate performance and good reliability. The projectile can achieve velocity of 950 feet per second and it delivers 371 ft. lbs. of energy at the bore.

This 45 ACP ammo is reliable in most guns out of the box but it thrives in the mainstream offerings from Springfield, Glock and Smith & Wesson and does especially well in the polymer framed guns. It is not the heaviest powder charge, so it isn’t as hot as some other 185 grain rounds, lending itself to easier recoil and making a faster follow up shot possible.

A Boxer primer inside of a pristine brass case makes this an easy to reload ammunition and the bullet is a proven performer in ballistic gelatin and in real world, duty use. For the price point it would be difficult to find another personal protection handgun ammunition in .45ACP that can perform this well.

A: This Federal Hi-Shok ammo is not likely to expand when it hits clothing. It might expand after passing through clothing and entering soft tissue, but that is not guaranteed.

A: Compared to full metal jacket, round nose (FMJ/FMJRN) .45 ammunition, these Federal jacketed hollow point (JHP) .45 cartridges are more likely to expand after hitting a soft target. In addition, they are likely to penetrate less through a soft target than FMJ projectiles. Given the same projectile/bullet weight, both types of projectile will have a similar trajectory and range.
