This 5.56x45mm cartridge by PMC sports a 62 grain full metal jacket M855 “green tip” projectile. Although the M855 bullet has earned a reputation for being able to pierce body armor, it doesn’t technically fit the ATF’s criteria for armor piercing bullets. Its penetrative capability is attributable to its steel composition -- the same reason that it will attract a magnet. The fact remains that this bullet won’t necessarily pierce body armor, although the relatively low cost to manufacture it has made it very popular among the AR crowd. This bullet’s full metal jacket does give it some admirable penetration abilities, with the added benefit of not fouling your rifle’s bore as quickly as lead projectile ammunition would.
